Chapter 313: Fierce Battle! Victory
Chapter 313: Fierce Battle! Victory
Of course, if it were only Lin Xinghai’s rate of fire, the two mercenaries wouldn’t have been so stunned.
After all, anyone could pull a trigger.
The problem was that Lin Xinghai’s accuracy was absolutely terrifying.
If they used their Tearing Rifles on full-auto, even against a dense horde of Zombies, they’d be lucky to kill a dozen or so after emptying an entire magazine.
After all, for a normal person, firing on full-auto only allows you to aim in a general direction, and Zombies only die if you destroy their heads.
Even with carefully aimed shots, they would often hit other parts of the Zombie’s body, failing to score a one-shot kill.
But when they watched Lin Xinghai open fire, it was as if he didn’t need to aim at all. He just picked up two Tearing Rifles and started spraying.
Yet, despite this casual approach, the High Level Zombies hidden in the horde below fell one after another, as if the Grim Reaper were calling them out by name.
From this firing position, Lin Xinghai emptied the magazines of six Tearing Rifles in just fifteen seconds, killing 300 High Level Zombies.
But he didn’t linger. He immediately activated his Speed Superpower and rushed to a firing position in another corner.
He had to cover the entire battlefield, so he didn’t dare stay in one firing position for too long.
Only after Lin Xinghai had left did the two mercenaries at the firing position snap out of their daze and hurriedly start reloading the magazines.
Of course, it wasn’t just the crew reloading his weapons who were shocked; the Mercenaries battling the Zombie horde were as well.
Although they had followed orders and handed over all their Armor-Piercing Bullets, very few of them truly believed that Lin Xinghai could eliminate all the High Level Zombies by himself.
The reason no one voiced any doubts was, for one, they couldn’t stand the thought of retreating and were desperate to win.
For another, the Combat Robots were holding the front line, so their safety was guaranteed even if Lin Xinghai couldn’t kill all the High Level Zombies in time.
That was why they were willing to take this gamble.
Many of them were even thinking about how they could hold off the High Level Zombies to buy more time for Lin Xinghai when the charge came.
But in reality, by the time the Zombie horde reached the mall and began attacking through every door and window, only the Intermediate and Ordinary Zombies were still alive.
The High Level Zombies, normally so cautious and cunning while hidden within the horde, had been killed mid-charge.
What’s more, some sharp-eyed Mercenaries could see they were being taken down in droves.
Anyone who witnessed this felt like they were seeing a ghost.
After all, just finding each of these High Level Zombies within the horde was difficult enough for a normal person, let alone locking onto and killing them in the blink of an eye.
But regardless, after Lin Xinghai demonstrated the power of a "Gun God," everyone’s shock gave way to pure elation.
If Lin Xinghai could really deal with all the High Level Zombies by himself as he claimed, then the plan was already more than halfway to success.
And things unfolded just as everyone had hoped. Even though Lin Xinghai had to cover the defenses on all four sides, he used his peerless Gun Technique and terrifying Speed to dart between firing positions. All by himself, he killed every High Level Zombie that charged the mall.
Without the pressure from the High Level Zombies, defending became far easier for the various Mercenary Corps.
One-shotting a High Level Zombie might be difficult, but for Intermediate Zombies, any veteran Mercenary with above-average Gun Technique could achieve near-perfect accuracy within twenty meters.
As for the Ordinary Zombies, no one wanted to waste bullets on them, so they just let them charge the defensive line.
Of course, any Ordinary Zombies that weren’t cut down by the Combat Robots were finished off by the Mercenaries positioned behind them.
These Mercenaries might not be skilled marksmen, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t fight. On the contrary, to join a Third Level Mercenary Corps, a lack of Gun Technique meant they had to be proficient in close-quarters combat.
By conserving ammunition to this extreme degree, their kill rate for Zombies dropped considerably, but they saved a massive amount of ammo.
Of course, a lower kill rate would normally be dangerous for the defensive line. However, the original Mecha Brigade had been split into five Mecha Squads of twenty Mechas each. Having even one of these squads charging into the fray outside was enough to relieve much of the pressure.
After nearly another hour of fierce fighting, the battle finally drew to a close.
It shouldn’t have taken that long; they had already killed over 40,000 Zombies in just forty minutes.
The problem was that the three "Hunters" refused to give up and kept summoning more Zombies.
After they killed a few more waves of less than a thousand Zombies each, Lin Xinghai had enough and piloted his Speed Mecha out to hunt the Hunters down himself.
The battle was only truly over once those three "Hunters" had fled in disarray.
"Sweep the battlefield! Collect the loot," Lin Xinghai ordered the moment he returned in his Speed Mecha.
Hearing the long-awaited command, everyone scrambled to obey with glee.
Although they had fought fiercely against this Zombie horde for nearly four hours, the rewards were plentiful.
In total, they had killed a terrifying 300,000 Zombies. The Elemental Crystals alone represented a massive income.
After giving the order, Lin Xinghai returned to the temporary command post.
"What’s our remaining ammunition count?" Lin Xinghai asked the moment he entered the command post.
The Zombie horde was gone, but that didn’t mean they were safe. No one could guarantee those "Hunters" wouldn’t circle back for a surprise attack.
Even if they didn’t, with the sheer density of Zombies in Guanghan City, more would soon swarm in to fill the void.
So if ammunition was low, they would be on edge the entire time they were sweeping the battlefield. They might even be forced to abandon the cleanup halfway through.
"Relax. We still have 6% of our ammunition reserves," Zhang Yue replied.
He’d had his men run the numbers earlier, and when he got the answer, he made them confirm it three times before he could believe it.
He knew that Lin Xinghai’s series of commands was designed to conserve ammunition, but he never expected they would save this much.
Lin Xinghai breathed a sigh of relief at this news.
A 6% ammunition reserve would normally be enough to kill over 10,000 Zombies. Using their new conservation tactics, they could probably take down 20,000. That was more than enough for the trip back.
"And what’s the final casualty report?" Lin Xinghai asked, moving on to the next critical question.
"Because of our ammo-conservation tactics, the number of injured was a bit high toward the end, reaching 125. But with Liu Miaomiao here, all the severely wounded were saved. As for fatalities, the number isn’t high—a total of 13."
"Our biggest loss was probably on the military’s side. We lost 6,231 Combat Robots," Zhang Yue said.
"Alright, cut the sob story," Lin Xinghai said dismissively. "Our haul was massive this time. We’ll definitely compensate you for your losses."
